This place is amazing! We came for a birthday party for my daughters friend. The staff were so nice and supportive. The guy (i forgot his name, sorry!) who hosted the kids party was so kind and truly looking out for the kiddos. Instead of telling the kids how to do it, he showed them and encouraged them! I loved that! If I had this place when I was a kid, I would never leave! Im so glad my kids get to experience what I love and they cant wait to go back! Thank You to all the staff for making this experience wonderful!

It was our first time rock climbing, and it was our first time at Alpine. My daughter really wanted to go for the first time after seeing a few friends do it and I’m so glad we went. She had so much fun and is already asking to go back. I also was able to rock climb and had a blast. The staff there is so kind and helpful. The facility is clean and well maintained. And you should try I’m jumping off of the city buildings because it’s so fun going down.

This place is amazing! My 14 year old daughter had never been but has expressed an interest in learning. A good friend of ours has been a member here for a long time and she came with us to be the belayer. It was clean, didn’t have the gym smell, the locker rooms/bathrooms were very clean and staff was super friendly and helpful. Will go again and probably become members!

Visited this climbing gym for the first time and had a great experience! The facility was clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the routes were fun with a good mix of challenges for different skill levels. Everyone was welcoming, and it was a great place to try out climbing. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Alpine is honestly a great climbing gym. They have everything and a good variety of it too. Very welcoming and they explain everything for first-timers which makes you feel more comfortable in the environment. It was my first time and it was a welcoming environment 🙂

Wolf Fivousix

Huuuge gym, as you would expect from the name, it is bouldering only. The weight/training area is a little limited compared to a lot of the other gyms I’ve been to, so expect a little bit of a crowd. There are plenty of walls to keep you entertained for a long time, you most likely will run out of steam before you run out of projects for the day! Worth noting that people don’t have the best bouldering etiquette in here, so do expect others to cut you off and, some times, even start climbing underneath you when you’re not done yet! But then again, that has less to do with the gym and more with the people in it. Climb safe!

Dogpatch Boulders is hands down one of the best climbing gyms in the Bay Area! The facility is massive, with walls for all levels—from beginner to advanced. The route setting is creative and challenging, keeping things fresh and exciting every time I visit. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to help with tips or advice. The community vibe here is amazing—welcoming and encouraging, no matter your skill level. One of the highlights? They have a sauna in each of the locker rooms! It’s the perfect way to unwind after a tough session on the walls. Combine that with their clean and well-maintained gym, spacious training areas, and even a yoga studio, and this place really has it all. Highly recommend for climbers of all levels!

Horrible staff at the front desk. They are ALL rude, none is better than the other. We came from queer crush and the guy at the desk wanted to charge us $34 when the fee was discounted to $20 for the queer event. Only when we mentioned it that he rectified. Save yourself the hassle and go to another climbing gym with nicer staff, Movement SF front desk blows them away 🙂

Had a lot of fun by myself. Not crowded on a Wednesday morning in December. So many walls/routes to choose from. Can use real chalk (unlike my local indoor climbing gym, which only allows liquid chalk). All areas (including bathrooms/locker rooms) are very clean. Temperature just right inside. The holds feel good (not greasy). The routes are fun to climb and figure out—the grades seem to scale for both technique and strength rather than just strength/height. Wish I had more time here. Looking forward squeezing in another session here the next time I’m in SF. Caveats: 5’0″ petite climber. Experience: ~1.5 yrs @ average ~2 sessions per week.

I wish they had one in Hayward, but it’s definitely worth the drive! Customer service is top notch, there is a food truck outside with texmex food if you’re hungry. Be sure to check in before 3 pm if you’re getting a day pass – it’s cheaper on weekdays! (Update) They have recently increased the day pass price, but made coming in with a member free on any day, not just the first Friday of the month (once a month still). They have also made the first time you come with a member free, and I have unlimited first time passes as a member. It is still the best climbing gym in the bay area IMO

I love this climbing gym. The gym itself is an easy 5/5. The routes are great, the layout is great and the workout/lifting area is surprisingly good for a climbing gym. The not so great part is the parking. Seriously an issue here. For one of the biggest climbing gyms on planet earth, the parking lot is comically tiny and the surrounding street parking is not convenient. The other issue that isn’t cool is how so many people put their bags on the chairs and couches in the seating area, then go lift or climb. There are maybe a hundred free lockers throughout this great gym yet inconsiderate people will still take up multiple seats with their stuff. It would be nice is this wasn’t allowed, but so it is. Overall, my gripes are overshadowed by the other aspects of this excellent gym. I love spending my time climbing the ever changing routes and noticing myself getting better and stronger. The route setting seems to get better and better, and even easy warm up routes are fun and interesting. I highly recommend giving the gym a try and if you live close, highly recommend biking there.

Been going for a year and I can’t get over how great of a facility Pacific Pipe is. There’s plenty of walls for boulders and sports climbing. The routes reset often so it never gets boring. Kaya is accessible for all the beta help you need. Even the gym equipments are well maintained and new machines are still being added. The locker rooms and showers are cleaned and well stocked. The community here is also top notch.

Athitaya Rungpetch ☆ 5/5
Sarah

Setting is unimaginative – mostly ladders, and routes lack flow. The belay testing process here feels overly pedantic and rigid rather than focused on practical competency. While safety is essential, experienced climbers are failed over arbitrary verbal checklists (such as explicit verbal reminders to check harness twists) rather than actual belaying technique and safety awareness. Ultimately, this approach alienates experienced climbers who are new to the area. Based on this experience, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Wonderful day spent on a rainy Sunday-adults & kids all had a great time climbing. Staff were really friendly despite it being hectic and busy. Lots of bouldering & climb routes- really huge inside! Other climbers were all really nice- it’s a positive vibe. Facilities are clean, great condition and the weights and exercise equipment section looked fabulous too. Restroom clean & lockers available. Prices are totally reasonable. Harness & shoes available for rent. Taco truck outside plus they were totally cool w us bringing in our own snacks & drinks & had some tables to sit at & eat ( keep all drinks & food away from climbing area). Do NOT leave anything in your car- break ins are common throughout the city. That said, we parked in dirt lot out back all day & it was fine. Will def be back.

Mercury Schroeppel

Really, really nice climbing space. Lots of tall walls, a very wide variety of climbs for people of all levels. The bouldering area is small, but you’re set if you like to top rope or lead. Whoever sets their routes does a great job — the climbs are always very interesting, and they update them regularly. There’s lot of overhang, straight-up-and-down and a small slabby section. Lots of fun corner climbs. There‘s also a decent number of exercise machines and a weightlifting area. Bathroom and locker room areas are nice and clean. Nice general vibe Staff is always friendly and helpful. Basically, everything you’d want in a climbing gym, except it’s across town from me. 😫

The gym is awesome! They have all necessary equipment for climbing and for working out. There are a steaming room, shower with shampoo etc., they also provide with towels. Gets really full during rush hour, so the time using cardio section is limited (30min) during this hours.

Awesome walls with great routes set. Uses a lot of underclings and high steps. Also has a great gym area for an overall workout experience. Sean (Shaun?) was super helpful and was able to make my experience renting a harness and equipment quick and painless. Highly recommend going here for a good workout or warm up before going outside.

I enjoy coming to this gym because they have a sauna in the men’s gym eventhough it’s tiny. . With that said, I do take exception to their stupid illogical policy of allowing women into the men’s locker room. Imagine if I went into the woman’s locker room as a man, completely naked, what they would think.

The route setters absolutely COOK at this gym. It’s not the largest, but it’s how you use the space. They’re always coming up with new ways to introduce climbers to break the idea of «straight up and straight down». Friendly staff, and always refreshing something. The gym space is great as well. All in all, one of my favorite places to climb.

Came in as a first-timer for a date night and was a bit confused by the pricing, as there was a sheet that stated first-time user $15, but it was actually $35 a piece. We came in at 8:06 pm to have some fun indoor bouldering. Lasted roughly an hour, as my other half was over it, but overall it was a great indoor climbing gym with locker rooms. Very inclusive space as well. Thanks for having us. The Traveling Truck Show

I’ve been coming here since last fall. The afternoon / evening staff are always friendly, the music is usually really good (esp at night), and the facilities are very clean. My main issue as a capable beginner is there are not enough V3 routes. Even some of the V2s are weirdly tricky or challenging, depending on the pitch. My favorite V3 was recently replaced it w some challenging (but not in a good way) so there are very few routes I really enjoy now. Hoping they go through and pull some stuff out soon. Also pretty please, move staff parking to the tandem spots. That’s all, appreciate you all.

This place has gone downhill since Covid. The staff used to be super friendly and welcoming. Now, everytime I go there (the weekdays in the morning) the girl at the front desk almost never even acknowledges me. She’s either on her phone or chatting with a friend. Other staff members are more prone to smiling and saying hello. They only have one pully tower and it’s always being used. The boulder routes are ok, but if you’re a beginner to intermediate climber and a shortish person, they don’t have that many. It is very clean in the restroom and yoga studio and I usually don’t have too hard a time finding a parking spot. But for the price, in my opinion, it should have a friendlier staff and more gym equipment.

Linda Lam

This climbing gym is absolutely great with so many amenities. The only downside is the limited parking. There’s a small lot behind the gym and street parking. Keep in mind that this is in between the main street and the neighborhood so you may have to drive around for a couple blocks before you find parking, especially during busy times. There’s a huge variety of bouldering walls of different grades for every type of climber. They also have a gym, both strength training with weights on the first floor and cardio machines on the 2nd floor. They also offer a variety of classes like yoga, etc. The bathrooms are also really nice and clean, with showers and a sauna.

Totally give 5 stars except for one item. Been members for a few months and love ❤️ this place. If I lived nearby I would be here 3-4 days a week. Great walls. 🧗‍♂️The staff is awesome. 🥳 Like seriously awesome. Parking is fine. Oh, and if they just removed the women’s hygiene products from the men’s room 🫃🤯 I’d give it a 5 🥳

Great bouldering routes, one section(5-10 routes) seem to be changed out every week and a half or 2 weeks. I don’t top rope, but alot of my friends have great things to say about the top toping here. Alot of v2-v6 routes, more than average amount of dyno routes in thise ranges too. Friendly staff and only ever have had positive interactions with the gym members here.

Gym is really large with 2 boulder areas. The top rope and lead sections have great diversity in grades and a good variety for lead climbers which was exciting! There were some really tall walls and some shorter walls, so it was good for all people. The actual gym area was one of the largest I’ve seen at any climbing gym and really well equipped. The things I’m not a fan of are more so issues that I have with all movement gyms- there are GrirGris attached to all the top ropes, not all of them are smooth for belaying. Also you have to schedule a lead test way in advance, so if you’re just visiting occasionally it’s hard to be able to lead. This gym has a few area in ropes and the front boulder pit where there was a lack of lighting and it was really dark midday. Otherwise great experience first time!

A very well equipped climbing gym in the Sunnyvale area. Their top rope section is much larger actually has a great distribution of grades. Their rope climbing grades are extremely lenient: for ex. A 5.10c here is most likely a 5.9 in other gyms Surprisingly, their workout area is also pretty big. Getting a membership here is going to fulfill most of your fitness needs. Avoid peak hours if possible as it gets crowded and you ll have to wait in line for getting on the wall

A huge shoutout to Alex at Movement in SV for a fantastic intro to climbing class with our child and three friends (ages 6, 8, 11, 12). The kids had a BLAST and Alex was great at instructions and supporting. Our kiddo loved it so much we’re considering a membership and birthday party there for her. PS the kid climbing wall has the alphabet which makes it easy for them to know where to climb next!

This is one of the largest climbing gyms in the bay area, so it has one of the largest variety of climbing routes and bouldering projects. They usually have a pretty good variety of grades as well. All the Movement gyms have the older style wall texture (before Walltopia became ubiquitous) which I actually prefer bc it looks and feels slightly more like real rock – especially on the crack climbs. This Sunnyvale gym also has a pretty good variety of crack routes. The fitness area is probably the largest I have seen in any climbing gym with a huge variety of equipment. During peak hours this place can get quite busy, so it’s best to go on weekday mornings if possible.

I have been going to The Peak of Fremont occasionally when I am in the area. Overall, I’ve had a great experience with their staff and the community that climbs here. Everyone is friendly, and the staff, when they aren’t busy, will greet you when you enter. The climbing gym is a part of a gym complex that’s connected with several other sports. It’s immediately on the left when you first enter the front door. This does mean parking can be a bit of a pain, but the parking lot is huge, and Peak of Fremont has their own little section to park at as well. The gym has a few bouldering walls, top rope walls, lead climbing walls, and auto belay. There’s also a training area that’s equipped with hanging boards, pull-up bars, free weights, barbells, and a kilter board. They have a variety of climbing routes that rotate often enough to keep beginners and more advanced climbers interested. If you’re looking to get into climbing, I would say that this is a good location to start with. Edit: 03/23/24 Went here again, and not much has changed, which is a good thing. Routes are still really fun, and they recently added a bunch of climbs that are not graded yet still very fun. I was checked off for auto belay, and that orientation was a few minutes. Staff is still helpful and kind. Climbers in the area are still nice to chat with. Overall, good time!

We hosted our child’s birthday party at The Peak and the Mission Peak Sportsplex and loved the overall experience! The organizers were very responsive and helped us through the booking and review process. On the event day, our host, Ashley, was amazing! She was polite and went an extra mile to ensure that our party was taken care of. Although we had set the final menu in advance, she was very accommodating when we requested an extra menu item during the party. The team that led the rock climbing experience at The Peak was so good, and they engaged the kids all through the experience. They even encouraged a few who were a little nervous about climbing. The facility itself is clean, well maintained, warm, and cozy. We will absolutely host another party here in the future!

Went here with my kids. The 2 week trial membership was worth it for these two weeks of summer when my kids don’t have other summer camps. My kids are 8-17 years old and all of them loved climbing. There are routes with auto-belay as well others with the manual two person belay hookups.

The main issue is there is no AC and just a broken fan in the bouldering area. Its hotter inside than outside on a hot day. Like hot yoga but rock climbing. It made it very uncomfortable to climb. Also alot of the bouldering areas were not set with routes. The belaying routes looked fun and there was better air flow there. But the upstairs training area was tiny and barely had any equipment. Same with the gym area. Looks like a very kid friendly gym but even for the kiddos it needs better air flow and some AC. Especially in Sacramento in the summer!

Me and my child are in love with this place. If you love rock climbing as much as we do, you will understand what I am writing about next. A huge selection of tracks to complete, from zero level to professional. Great atmosphere. Very friendly and professional staff. You can climb alone, together, in a group, participate in competitions, and raise your level. I’m in love, that says it all.

Always so much fun! Many options for many levels of abilities, clean and safe environment, climbing walls, and equipment. I will say though, most of the staff isn’t overly friendly or welcoming… But helpful when needed. Also, bathrooms were a bit in need of a deep clean.

One of my kids wanted to rock climb for his birthday. This place was awesome. Super helpful staff. I love the bouldering and a play area for my really young one. Can’t wait to go back without my kids😅

Came here for a school field trip best experience l had ever had! The flow rider is amazing and fun to learn on how to surf. The laser tag was awesome and fun with friends! And the best thing about this place is that it is near my home so no more 30-1 hour trips to go to a overpriced dirty Arcade.

Ok experience, although it was very hot, in every section of the building it got even hotter. Literally only in the hallway leading to the surfing area and gym was cool. I say to clean your arcade and games and trampoline slide because it was all very dusty and dirty no shade all tea. EVERY room had a oder to it. It was either really bad where I couldn’t bear it anymore and I was hoping to go home but unfortunately my school was there for a field trip. In some places it was very humid I seriously couldn’t breathe. Don’t even get me started on the food, however, the pepperoni pizza was good, I almost threw up when I took my first bite on the cheese. No drinks were cold which was so sad because IT was a LIVING nightmare in that desert place. I know i said it was an ok experience but now i’m rethinking life choices and now decided that I would never go back here again. Wasted a good 60 bucks and time on writing a permission slip.

This place is awesome! So fun and such an interesting variety of stuff to do. The gym is the most busy area but there’s also a wave rider which is very fun. The rock climbing area is nice as well as the basketball courts and all the inflatables. Staff was super cool.

My son and I had an incredibly good time! Not only does the facility have amazingly fun attractions, but the staff were engaging and had a lot of patience in coaching us to have an even more fun experience! Just amazing!

very fun! the wave rider is awesome and wasn’t too crowded considering it was a saturday afternoon in the summer. $20 for a day pass was very reasonable considering there’s a basketball court, arcade (although most of the arcade games were broken including all 4 ski-ball machines), waver rider, bounce castle, etc. had a great day here.

Frequently asked questions about climbing gyms in California

What makes a good climbing gym?

A good climbing gym in California offers a variety of factors beyond just having walls. It should have a diverse selection of routes catering to different skill levels, from beginner-friendly walls to challenging overhangs and deep-water soloing areas. Well-maintained equipment, including ropes, belay devices, and crash pads, is absolutely crucial for safety. Furthermore, a positive and supportive community and well-trained staff contribute significantly to the overall experience.

How experienced do I need to be to start climbing?

You don't need to be an experienced climber to start climbing in a California gym. Most gyms offer introductory classes that cover the basics of climbing techniques, safety procedures, and belaying. However, even without a class, you can start with easy routes and top-roping, which is the safest method for beginners. It's always recommended to learn from a qualified instructor before attempting more challenging climbs.

    What safety equipment is required?

Climbing inherently involves risk, and safety is paramount. A California gym will require you to use personal protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet, climbing shoes, and a harness. The gym will also provide belay devices and crash pads for fall protection. It's vital to understand and follow all safety protocols and the gym’s specific rules before starting any climb. Never climb without proper supervision.

Are there different types of climbing available?

Yes, California climbing gyms offer a range of climbing disciplines. Top-roping is the most common, where the rope is already anchored above the climber. Lead climbing involves the climber clipping the rope into the wall as they ascend, requiring more skill and experience. Bouldering, which does not use ropes, focuses on short, powerful climbs on padded walls. Some gyms also offer rope-free climbing or campus climbing for advanced climbers.

What about gym etiquette and rules?

Maintaining a good climbing environment is crucial. Gym etiquette includes spotting climbers, cleaning your shoes after climbing, respecting other climbers’ space, and following the gym’s rules regarding route grading and climbing order. Most gyms have a specific queueing system to ensure fairness and prevent crowding. Understanding and adhering to these rules contributes to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

How much does it cost to climb at a gym?

Gym membership costs vary depending on the location and the type of membership. Day passes are typically available for those who aren't ready to commit to a monthly membership. Drop-in rates can range from around $20 to $30, while monthly memberships can cost anywhere from $80 to $150, offering unlimited climbing access. Some gyms also offer student discounts or family packages.

Are there climbing gyms that offer classes and training?

Many climbing gyms in California offer a variety of classes and training programs for climbers of all levels. These can include beginner classes covering the fundamentals, belay courses, lead climbing courses, and advanced technique clinics. Some gyms also have certified climbing coaches who offer personalized instruction and training plans to help you improve your skills.

What kind of climbing routes are typically found?

California climbing gyms often feature a diverse range of routes, reflecting the state's varied climbing styles. You'll find slab climbs with smooth, horizontal walls, vertical walls with straight-up climbs, overhangs that require powerful moves, and crux climbs, which are particularly challenging routes that require advanced technique. Gyms often have routes graded according to difficulty, making it easier to find climbs that match your skill level.

Do climbing gyms offer other activities besides climbing?

Some California climbing gyms offer additional activities to enhance the climbing experience. These can include weight training areas with specialized equipment, yoga classes, rock climbing competitions, and social events. Many gyms also have lounge areas where climbers can relax, watch videos, or connect with other climbers. Check with the individual gym for the specific activities they offer.

What is the typical climbing community like?

The climbing community in California is generally known for being supportive and welcoming. Climbers often help each other out, offering spotting and advice. Many gyms organize social events and climbers' nights, creating opportunities for climbers to connect and build friendships. A strong sense of community is a key part of the climbing experience, fostering a positive and encouraging environment for climbers of all levels.
