I really like the library here — its design is unique, very modern with a touch of old charm. For anyone who enjoys learning or wants a quiet place, the library is the perfect spot. I saw some seniors sitting by the window, just relaxing and enjoying the view — it felt so calming. The staircase is built in a spiral shape, with a water feature both inside and outside. The library also has a separate area for children to play and learn. Next to it is a gift shop where they sell ocean‑themed items like seashells, starfish, and cute handmade bags. I was impressed because they even have a statue from China’s Qin Shi Huang displayed there.

Really neat library. Good, large size. They have a bookstore as well. The main attraction is the four large column fountains right when you walk in.

One of the most beautiful libraries I have ever been in. The fountains are lacking water as of late, but what a place to read. Waterfalls, rubber trees, etc. Feels like reading in a jungle. Basically an atrium in some areas. Architecture is just gorgeous. The place is full of books!! But really, it’s a big library.

This is an incredible library. It has something for everyone. I especially like all the water features inside as well as the large used bookstore. The grounds surrounding the library are beautiful with lakes and a garden. A person could spend days exploring the inside of this library and all the nature areas adjacent to it. It even has a very large park across the street that includes a nice restaurant near the lake.

One of the most beautiful library around with water running through the entire building and surrounded with woods, ponds and hiking areas. And the materials inside the library is pretty nice too.

Library overall was nice but there were major issues with the restrooms today. The women’s restrooms near the front circulation desk was closed, the children area restrooms closed, restrooms near the theater closed, long line next to the maker space and the toilet near the archives was wonky. I liked the fountains and cool pond with plenty of seating. The volunteers in the maker space were helpful. One person showed me around. Someone else showed examples from the embroidery book and directed us to the QR code to register for introduction classes on Thursday.

First time exploring this library and it’s a real beauty. What a lovely way to include nature indoors. It’s a little loud when you walk in because of the water feature but if you work your way to the back it settles down. I was sad to hear the cafe closed I was really looking forward to a cup of joe but they have something on the works coming soon. I got to take sneak into the creative room and it looked very busy which is great to see. I highly recommend stopping in to work or study and if you need some fresh air just walk out into the parking lot and work your way down and enjoy the park and go for a stroll if you would like. The other cafe is in walking distance. The whole area is kid friendly if you have little one. The library has a kids section and a lovely gift job to support this branch.

Place is massive and a sanctuary for the unhoused. If you haven’t been here it’s definitely worth a visit. It’s also an architectural masterpiece. Floor after floor of elegant design filled with people sleeping or seeking some sort of shelter. It’s definitely a sigh to behold. Free bathrooms.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5-Star Review Los Angeles Central Library is absolutely breathtaking. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the beauty and the preserved historic energy of the space. I’m from St. Louis, Missouri, where our Central Library is already rich with knowledge, history, and art — so I truly didn’t think I could be surprised… but this library completely exceeded my expectations. When I stepped into the rotunda on the second floor, my heart honestly skipped a beat. It made me feel like a little child again — curious, inspired, and eager to explore every single book in the building. The experience was also incredibly comforting and welcoming. The staff were kind and helpful, and one thing I really appreciated was the free, secure charging station. My phone was low, and I was able to leave it safely charging while I explored — such a thoughtful touch. The children’s area is beautiful, and the teen space is just as impressive. I only had about an hour there, but it left such a lasting impression that I’m already planning to come back with my family and spend more time. I highly recommend anyone visiting Los Angeles to stop by the Central Library. It’s not just a place to read — it’s an experience. 📚✨

I discovered this place by accident. I had gone for a visa interview on Flower street, was short on some paperwork so needed a place with WiFi access – and voila right across the street sits this majestic library- a LA landmark. Even if you are not into libraries, this one is a must visit. Thank you to the California public library system for keeping such a vibrant reading, arts and community culture alive.

LA’s LEGACY of LEARNING! So often do we take for granted the the importance of reading and education, LA’s Central Library is a physical reminder of the beauty of books. It may sound weird, but I felt safe here. There’s solace in learning of the many individuals who have fought to preserve and expand literacy and access to citizens across Los Angeles. Their accounts of enduring fires, financial hardship, and reconstruction are encouraging and compelling. I’m SO happy my Mom re-introduced me to this library, we’ve hadn’t come here in YEARS. We used to come here when I was small, I felt an Instant connection to the children’s room when I walked in. The stunning design of the Central Library is impressionable, from the detailed carpets in the children’s section to the art deco ceilings and sculpts. The building feels loved and cared for, it’s elegant and incredibly clean. From patrons to staff, everyone respected Central’s quiet space. Central Library has sections for everything, fiction, informational texts, a dedicated, inclusive space for teens called TeenScape, and plenty of computers for public use. I also spotted a museum-like exhibit honoring the library’s timeline and introducing all the features of the facility. If you’re looking for a momento, there’s even a gift shop! Note: This library has multiple stories and escalators, it’s pretty accessible. Additionally, a cafe is nearby, enjoy a cup of Joe while you’re basking in written delight.

I came here for the 100 year anniversary festival. It had been a while since I had visited. The first time was because I had just moved to L.A. and based on a travel book, this was one of the must see landmarks. I had also watched an episode of Huell Howser on PBS and wanted to see the fountains up front that were featured on the show. Inside, the atrium with huge colorful chandeliers hanging from the skylights left an unforgettable memory and when I saw them again, they were still as amazing as I had remembered. What I hadn’t remembered was how many levels there were. From the outside, the building doesn’t look very tall in comparison to the modern skyscrapers looming above it. However, the festival encourages you to go to each level by having something to see and do on each one. There are 8 levels total with 4 of them underground. A lot of work was put into making the festival as engaging as possible. Outside there were booths with freebies, a live band, and food trucks. Inside there were guest speakers, screenings, and arts & crafts. I easily spent 6 hours at the festival. Restrooms weren’t a problem since there was one on each level. The screening and speaker I went to see talked about the art and architecture of the building, like I didn’t know it was built around the same time ancient tombs in Egypt were discovered, which led to the library having a pyramid on its roof and sphinxes by the stairs. One of the unfortunate experiences I had was at the information booth: Online I read the suggestion to present your library card so you can get your parking validated and you’ll pay $1 instead of $10. I looked online and was pleased to find out I could apply for an electronic library card since I’m an L.A. resident. I could also pre-register for a physical card and pick it up in person. The morning of the festival I went to the info booth to pick up my card. The man was very short with me and told me to go to the line for checking books in & out. At that line I was told that since I already had an electronic card, I couldn’t get the physical card, which was different from what was said online. Exasperated, I said all I wanted was to get my parking validated, so I was sent back to the info booth. At the info booth, the man from the books check in & out line got angry at the man & woman at the info booth for sending me there when all I wanted was to get my parking validated & they both yelled back «She didn’t say that!» When the man from the books check in & out line left, I asked if either the electronic or physical card expired. Both do. The woman at the info booth tried to send me back to the books check in & out line to get the physical card, but I said I didn’t see the point if both versions expired, showed her my electronic library card, and she quietly validated my parking, but I could sense her rage over the whole ordeal. To be clear, I came here for a good time. I tried to get my parking validated right when they opened so I could beat the crowds, and since it was so early, all 3 employees hadn’t dealt with hundreds of visitors yet to be that irate and angry already. It was not a good start to the festival. Fortunately, the rest of the event went smoothly and the other employees were nice. It makes me wish they were at the front desk instead. If you’re going to put people up front, they need to already be people who enjoy chatting with other people. The 3 I ended up with seemed more fitted to work in the back alphabetizing books. Overall, I had a good time. The library is as beautiful as I remembered and the activities were fun. Just beware of some of the employees at the front desks.

LOVED IT! 😍 The architecture is beautiful. The Dr. Seuss themed children’s area was absolutely adorable! The used bookstore was fabulous! I also enjoyed the view of the Coronado Bridge from the top floors! They even validate for 2 free hours of parking right under the library! Don’t miss visiting this San Diego landmark! 😁📗👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I happen upon a community presentation event that took place just outside the entrance. The staff were immediately engaging, welcoming me to the library and introducing me to all the floors and features inside. I ended up getting a study room that was private for the work I needed to get done. Toured the Makers Workshop area on the way out and was again greeted and encouraged to participate in all the offerings. Totally delightful experience!

Great time at the San Diego Central Library in East Village! 9 floors of books, audiobooks, DVDs, art exhibits, study rooms, computers, and even more. Although it is in a more sketchy part of town there is abundant security that made us feel safe the whole time. There is a nice children’s section with over 1,000 children books as well as toys and play computers. The view from the 9th floor is beautiful of the Coronado bridge and we really enjoyed the art exhibit. Nice gift shops as well. Recommend!

The San Diego Central Library is an absolute gem in downtown! The building itself is visually stunning with incredible postmodern architecture. Inside, it’s clean, functional, and very well-maintained—there’s a noticeable security presence that makes the space feel safe and comfortable, even with the unhoused population outside. They offer great amenities including meeting/work rooms, copiers, and scanners. Don’t miss the 8th floor: the views are amazing, and the small rooftop work area is totally worth checking out. Pro-tip: park under the library, get your ticket validated, and enjoy a couple of great hours working or exploring what the city has to offer!

I visited Geisel Library to study, and it was such an impressive and iconic place. I can tell that this is where the intellectual prowess of formidable young minds are formed. I can feel their dedication to excellence just by walking in. Both the exterior and interior architecture are remarkable, and the space is quiet, clean, and perfectly organized for studying or research. There’s also a newspaper section with publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, which was really interesting. If you’re on campus or simply enjoy unique libraries, this place is definitely worth visiting.

📚 Geisel Library – An Architectural and Intellectual Treasure On the campus of UC San Diego On a recent visit to see my son — who’s tidying up his own academic journey at UCSD — I found myself inside one of the most iconic libraries in the world: Geisel Library. And what a treat it turned out to be. It’s not just a library. It’s a visual marvel that seems to rise from the ground like a spaceship designed for the most curious minds. For someone who loves books, spaces, and silence in equal measure — this was bliss. The kind of place where ideas feel like they float in the air. What struck me most wasn’t just the architecture (though it’s impossible to ignore that brutalist–meets–futurist design) — it was the soul of the space. Every corner breathes intellect. Students immersed in thought, collaborative spaces buzzing softly with energy, and shelves upon shelves of knowledge waiting to be discovered. As a parent, it felt comforting — my son gets to study in an environment that nurtures excellence. As a bibliophile, it was nothing short of sacred. 📍 Rating: 5/5 — A must-visit even if you’re not a student. 📝 Pro tip: Sit by the large glass windows and just soak in the vibes. Books optional.

Mission Viejo library is very clean very neat and well laid out. It’s not a library that’s just full of books. They have computer stations, study rooms, conference rooms, and in the middle of the library there is almost like a gentleman’s lounge with two fireplaces. I often see People in the comfortable chairs, relaxing by the fireplace reading a good book. The library has a children’s area and on the opposite side, a quiet area for a serious study. Again, the library is well staffed with researchers people to help you find specific items or books as well as administrative staff. They all are extremely friendly and helpful. One side of the library has tables and chairs and comfortable seating with a large window that you can see out. With the window it’s very bright and open and I often see students as well as teachers studying. They have display cases with artwork done within the community, as well as galleries of painting And drawings from the local schools. In short, this library has the help you need and the places you can study comfortably. The library is very comfortable very open and well Staff.

I love the friendly and knowledgeable staff here and the fact that they’re open until 9:00 pm. I wish they had better and stronger printers, that copied both sides not only to save paper/ink but also to save us 15 cents a page. I need to print so much, but it’s too expensive at Staples and I can’t do it at this library. They would make so much more money by just investing in an industrial printer. Please!!! 🙏

The Cerritos Library is honestly one of the coolest libraries I’ve ever visited. It feels more like a museum or an attraction than a typical public library. The architecture is impressive, there’s a huge aquarium, and every area has something interesting to look at. The children’s section is especially amazing and clearly had a lot of thought put into it. Its also a GREAT place to put on headphones and write ! or read. My only complaint is tmobile has zero service there and the library charges like 100$ a year to be a member and get wifi… that sucks

This isn’t just a library — it’s a masterpiece. From the outside, you’re greeted by stunning architecture that looks more like a fancy art museum or a chic civic center. The stone facade and rainbow logo? Gorgeous. The trees and outdoor seating? Perfect for pretending you’re a mysterious writer working on your next bestseller. Inside, it’s a jaw-dropping blend of old-world charm and futuristic cool: ✨ Rich wooden arches and elegant chandeliers that whisper class. ✨ Modern metal reference desks and glowing lights that say we’re the future, darling. ✨ An escalator (yes, in a library!) and bright art installations that give the whole place serious main-character energy. The book selection is excellent, the seating is plentiful, and the vibes? Immaculate. Whether you’re here to actually read or just vibe in a beautiful space, this library delivers. Honestly, Cerritos Library is worth a visit even if you don’t need a book — come for the design, stay for the inspiration. One of the most breathtaking public libraries you’ll ever walk into. 💛✨ Highly recommend. Bring a book, bring a camera, bring your best «I’m an intellectual» attitude — you’ll love it.

Cerritos Library is undeniably one of the most beautiful and well-designed libraries, and I understand why it’s a point of pride for the city. I’ve been a regular visitor for the past 2–3 years, coming every Saturday with my child to read and practice comprehension together. However, what has consistently been disappointing is the lack of basic library etiquette. A library should maintain a certain level of quiet, but many visitors treat it more like a café—talking loudly and having conversations that carry throughout the space. What’s more concerning is that staff rarely step in to address the noise or reinforce any expectations. I’m not expecting absolute silence, but there should at least be a reasonable effort to preserve a respectful reading environment. For a facility of this caliber, I truly hope more attention is given to maintaining the atmosphere that a library is meant to provide.

A World-Class Library Experience for the Whole Family! Cerritos Library is hands-down one of the best public libraries in California — if not the entire country. As a licensed architect and a father of two, I’m consistently amazed by the thoughtful design, modern infrastructure, and the way every space supports curiosity, learning, and play. We visit regularly, and my kids absolutely love it here! The architecture is stunning — a perfect blend of innovation and warmth. From the dramatic dinosaur exhibit and themed areas to the interactive digital stations and the educational zones, every corner is designed to inspire all ages. The water features and sculptures around the building create a relaxing, park-like environment that extends the experience beyond books. What I especially appreciate is the attention to real family needs: the mini restroom designed specifically for toddlers is a small but incredibly meaningful feature. It shows that this place truly understands and supports parents. Whether we’re exploring the Earth’s ecosystems, learning through play, or simply enjoying a quiet reading moment — Cerritos Library continues to be a favorite destination for my entire family. Thank you for creating such an amazing community space!

I went to use the computers and the printer but what a headache to use these things. Printer only accept cash in the first place then does not have wife or bluetooth does not have any cable to use it and the computers are not working only 1 of 4. The wepa app or whatever is called they overcharge you for 1 copy like whaaat. Not friendly at all and not outdated. Some of the employees are nice but some they don’t know how to use the equipment either. Not coming back anymore.

Today was my first time at the library and I did not enjoy it at all! Location is great. There’s public parking across the street, a cafe that opens until 2pm on the ground floor, and a Starbucks around the corner, so it was a good alternative to my usual library which was closed today. I sat at the 4th floor reading area and had the misfortune of a young couple with no library etiquette coming to the same zone! They were yapping the whole time, and when I respectfully asked them to keep it down, the girl had the temerity to be upset that I came to the library without noise canceling headphones! Perhaps someone can explain to me if the 4th floor allows noise, because they completely ruined my library experience. Maybe I should have moved, but I’d been here for over a couple of hours and well settled before they showed up. I was not surprised to find that they got into an altercation with another library guest the day before. The library should do better with checking disruptive users. I won’t be coming here when I need peace and quiet to study!

A humongous library in the heart of San Jose. I think there were like, 8 floors? Which is even more than the San Francisco Main Library! There is endless study space and an infinite catalogue of books. It really feels like a center for everything, as you can also find programs, events, collections, and showcases here. I really liked their California collection! I think the library doubles as the college library for San Jose State, too, so there are some student resources and spaces. The building is really beautiful, and the view gets better the higher you go. The main reason I docked a star from the MLK Library is because I think it could be better maintained. Some floors were great, but other floors were awkwardly furnished and had missing chairs, broken outlets, empty bookshelves, and even spills and messes. Other than that, it’s a near-perfect library. Overall, 4/5.

The elevators, escalators, electrical outlets, and facilities are all excellent. I recommend the 8th floor for everyone. It has a nice view, natural light, and a quiet environment for studying. Make sure to bring wet wipes to clean the tables, as they tend to be a bit dusty.

Incredible staff and resources. The location of the MLK Library itself is iconic in the heart of downtown San José. Steps away from San José State and Northeastern University, with easy access to City Hall. Wonderful programs and available rooms for a variety of diverse inclusive activities.

What’s not to love. We mainly go for kids section but adult collection also seems vast. Kids area is so inviting. Plenty of seats/ tables. Restroom within kids section makes it so convenient with little ones. Main restrooms are clean as well. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Very easy check out, appreciate it can take several books at once instead of one by one.

Pleasanton Library is a wonderful place for families and children. The library is clean, peaceful, and well organized, with a great collection of books and helpful staff. My child enjoys visiting, exploring books, and participating in the activities. It is a welcoming place that encourages reading, learning, and creativity. We truly appreciate having such a great library in our community.

My favorite spot to hang. Used to spend an hour or two with the kids every Saturday. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable, the facility is well maintained. My only complaint is that funding prevents them from keeping the long hours they used to maintain, but it’s not the library’s fault. Love it here.

This is likely the largest library in the area. The staff are very welcoming and attentive. The children’s section on the first floor is spacious and great for families; notably, during summer vacation, they distribute lunches to children and provide a dedicated area where kids can eat comfortably. A couple of downsides: 1. People bring their own lunches to eat on the second floor—something I have never encountered at other libraries. 2. The third floor and the elevator area are filled with a strong, unpleasant odor; I strongly advise against letting children enter this area.

I mainly love being there for the free wifi and charging, they have a ton of cool books, it was best to find they have movies and music disks, the only thing that bothers me are the carpets because they look like they’re in a desperate need of cleaning, but otherwise everything is clean and organized. Pretty quiet unless you’re sitting near the kids section but that’s to be expected.

I’m glad it’s still there, it used to be such a nicer library. Took my daughters there. They really enjoyed it. Seems like a lot of the library has kind of been closed off. Also seems like a place for transients to hang out. It would be nice if the city put more money into public spaces like this.

Large library with lots of quiet places to study, tons of reference materials, cute children’s area. Only negative thing I can say is that there were a lot of homeless people there. Even one man snoring away lying across a table and a lady taking a bath in the bathroom sink. I think it’s ok to have a place for folks to get out of the summer heat but I am reluctant for my teenage daughter to go there alone.

It’s a really large Library. I am always able to find the art and craft reference books I’m looking for. There’s plenty of room to sit. Probably the only free place to sit and get out of the heat while enjoying a good book.

We love this Library’s books for sale and their craft workshops. One hour of letting your creativity do it’s thing. The staff is always friendly and they have a lot of patience with attendees. Also, their 50 cents – $2.00 books are very nice and affordable.

Great library, very good place to volunteer. Personally feel great volunteering with them. They the best books you may not find elsewhere, you can search for a book online and staff will also help you. They also provide free wifi. Separate children section which have lots of books, small play area, lots of toys for kids. Library also conducts many other programs which will help people to develop their skill set.

Beautiful library. Settled in an old style building. Vast and spacious. The interior was warm and cozy. We mainly visited the kid section, so that area was a bit busier than the rest of the library. The other part was so quiet that you can hear the sounds of footsteps or page turning. The kid section was huge and had a lot of books catering to different age groups. They also have an activity area and tech tables where children can use iPads or computers for free.

An excellent facility in Redwood City very close to the railway station. Any resident can get a permanent card free of charge while a visitor can get a temporary registration valid for 90 days. It has a mini discussion room, a big room to conduct collaborative workshops. Would love to visit as many times as possible.

Frequently asked questions about libraries in California

What services do California libraries typically offer?

California libraries offer a remarkably diverse range of services, extending far beyond simply lending books. Most libraries provide access to computers and internet, which is increasingly vital for individuals seeking employment, education, and accessing government services. They also frequently host literacy programs for children and adults, offering reading groups, homework assistance, and computer training. Many offer specialized programs like job search workshops and small business resources, reflecting a commitment to community development. Furthermore, they often provide meeting spaces for community groups and organizations, bolstering local civic engagement.

Are libraries truly free to use?

While library services are largely provided through public funding, it's important to understand that some fees may apply in certain circumstances. While borrowing physical materials is generally free, there may be charges for premium services like printing, copying, or access to specialized databases. Some libraries may also charge a small membership fee, though many offer free memberships to all residents. It’s always best to check with your local library for their specific fee structure, as this can vary significantly between jurisdictions.

What about digital resources – ebooks and audiobooks?

California libraries are increasingly invested in providing digital resources. Through platforms like OverDrive and Libby, patrons can access a vast collection of ebooks and audiobooks for free with a library card. Many libraries also offer access to online magazines, newspapers, and research databases, providing valuable resources for research and learning. The availability of these digital resources is continually expanding, reflecting the library’s commitment to adapting to evolving information needs.

Do libraries offer programs for children and teens?

Libraries play a crucial role in fostering a love of reading and learning in young people. They regularly host a wide range of children’s programs, including story times, craft sessions, and summer reading programs, designed to promote literacy and engagement. For teenagers, libraries offer teen advisory boards, gaming events, maker spaces equipped with 3D printers and other technology, and tutoring services, catering to a broad spectrum of interests and needs.

How do libraries help with job searching?

Libraries are increasingly recognized as valuable resources for individuals seeking employment. They offer a variety of services specifically designed to support job seekers, including resume writing workshops, mock interviews, access to online job boards, and computer training to help individuals develop essential skills. Many libraries also provide career counseling and information about local employers, facilitating a smoother transition into the workforce.

What role do libraries play in supporting literacy?

Libraries are fundamentally dedicated to promoting literacy at all levels. They provide early literacy programs for young children, helping them develop foundational reading skills. They also offer adult literacy programs, assisting adults in improving their reading and writing abilities. Furthermore, libraries provide one-on-one tutoring and literacy resources to support learners of all ages, contributing significantly to educational equity.

Are libraries just about books anymore?

While books remain a core component of library collections, libraries have evolved significantly to meet the changing needs of their communities. They’ve become community hubs offering a diverse range of services and resources. Libraries now provide access to technology, meeting spaces, cultural events, and educational programs, solidifying their role as essential institutions for learning, connection, and civic engagement. The shift reflects a broader understanding of a library’s potential.

How are libraries funded in California?

California libraries are primarily funded through a combination of state and local taxes. The California State Library provides funding to local libraries through grants and shared resources. Local funding typically comes from property taxes and sales taxes, demonstrating a community’s investment in its library system. Funding structures can vary by county and city, reflecting local priorities and needs. The system relies on public support to ensure continued access to library services.

What is a ‘Friends of the Library’ group?

‘Friends of the Library’ groups are volunteer-led organizations that support their local libraries. These groups often raise funds through fundraising events, grant applications, and private donations. They also advocate for the library within the community and assist with programming and volunteer efforts. The ‘Friends’ groups play a vital role in supplementing library funding and ensuring the library’s ongoing success, acting as dedicated community advocates.

How can I get a library card?

Obtaining a library card in California is typically a straightforward process. You’ll generally need to provide proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or lease agreement. The specific requirements may vary by library, so it’s best to check with your local library’s website or visit in person. Once you have a library card, you’ll have unlimited access to the library’s collections and services, opening up a world of opportunities for learning and exploration.
