Best adoption center EVER! We just adopted our BESTEST boy! Our new family member! These animals are extremely well taken care of. Very happy and healthy, completely up to date with all vaccines and are all spayed&neutered. The center is very, very clean. They have quite a few animals and they're all really cleaned up. They have a play area to meet different dogs, and it's so cute. They have some animals that you can even have sleep overs with! Tell me that isn't the cutest thing ever 😭💕 they have kittens, tiny puppies, adult dogs, younger dogs, older dogs, adult cats. Our baby came with everything he needed. A full bag of treats, a new bag of food, flea treatment, his full medical records, and even a toy!! Thank you so, so much to Warner Brothers, by the way!!!!!!! We had all of our fees paid by them. All of the animals there have that promotion happening right now. They have a full shop of toys and accessories available as well. Honestly, this was the best, most amazing experience of our life. They have a "forever" policy where they would take back the animal you adopted, if for any reason you had to let go of your pet. Our baby is staying with us Furever but that's a great policy to have for anyone, really. Thank you all so very much for helping us find our bestest boy ever 💕 we will never forget how amazing this adoption center is!

We had such a great experience adopting our cat here. The team was incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely cared about the animals. The adoption process was smooth and very affordable. It only cost us $15, and that included all of her vaccines and her being spayed, which is honestly amazing. They even sent us home with food and treats to help her settle in, which we really appreciated. You can tell they truly want the best for the animals and the families adopting them. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to adopt. They made the whole experience easy, positive, and memorable.

Just adopted a puppy from this adoption center! We were fostering Kratos for a month before deciding to adopt him and received so much support during the entire process. The foster specialist that was helping us was Jess and we are so grateful for how friendly and helpful she was! We had an amazing experience, thank you Best Friends Animal Society.

two years ago this company gave me my best friend. She was born a Felv+ cat and didn’t have a life span longer than 6months. She made it to two years and I am so thankful for this agency for allowing me to adopt her and love her for her whole life. I will miss her forever

I had an amazing experience here. I adopted a beautiful Cat here exactly 2 weeks ago. I went in just to browse and couldn’t leave without Milo. They do an amazing job making sure the animals are well taken care of and send you home with a nice supply of food and all the necessary information to properly care for your new pet 🙏🏽 Milo is such a sweet, cuddly and curious cat. I’m so grateful for finding this place and the smooth process they provided to send me home with my new best friend Thank you guys for all you do! This was the best birthday present I could’ve gifted myself 🥰 12/10 experience. Highly recommend. It will make your life 10x better.

It’s been a week since we adopted our kittens and we couldn’t be happier. 🥰 This shelter surprisingly exceeded our expectations. Immaculate facility, vast space, modern and well-lit, seems adequately staffed and organized. We visited multiple areas (4-5) where their cats were stationed in clean, moderately-spaced kennels before making our final decision. Yesenia at the front desk was very helpful and kind. Ruth was super patient and accommodating with us as we visited and encountered a few cats we were deciding on. Thanks Ruth – we really appreciated your time when we came last Sunday! Alan was courteous and concise regarding adoption papers and affiliated paperwork/records. Lastly, Abigail was personable when it came to talking about insurance and we felt no pressure/obligation to purchase. Though we did since we felt fully informed and decided it was the right choice to make for our recent additions to our family. Thank you guys so much for your efforts and the opportunity to give a loving home to these fur babies!

Good selection of pet products and helpful/friendly service. Been going here since I was a child for various pet needs. I got my cockatiel bird (recent pictures posted) from Whitie's Pets about 25 years ago, and she is still with me, by my side. I also love that Whitie's carries the big yellow boxes of millet for purchase. Thank you Whitie's for serving our community and pet needs.

Don't buy fish here. They won't do returns after 48 hours. The fish died within a week, tested my water and its all fine. They refused to even talk to me, strict policy. I even froze the fish to take them back. This fish was $80, what awful place to deal with. Beware of the strict 48 hour policy. If the fish are sick, hope you find out before the 48 hours. Never shopping here again.

Everytime I've bought an animal from them it has died… After my 4 different guinea pigs got sick and passed away, 2 rats I bought just passing away for no apparent reason and multiple arowanas dying I stoped buying animals from them. I am a seasoned pet owner with much experience with these types of animals. I personally don't really recomend them if you're going to buy an animal… All the staff are usually really nice. It's nothing against them I'm just not sure of the quality of the breeders they get their animals from. Plus their prices are really high.

Thank you so much for the people that donated for my baby's surgery and to the staff for being so kind and helpful. I dont know what I would do if I lost my baby girl, mom of all my grandkids. I had to take my dog in for surgery due to a lipoma. These people are great. The receptionist, the techs, the doctors and the surgeon all were polite, knowledgeable, friendly and awesome. My dog is recovering nicely, already trying to be herself after only 22 hours since surgery. Surgery is so expensive that you hope they sew the dog up right. I've had four dogs before this one that required anesthesia and stitches and the stitches came out on two dogs. One of was a little too active so she helped the stitches come out, but the other one did nothing and the stitches came out on their own after a cancer surgery. A hassle to go back and have stitches redone There's no way these stitches are coming out because they used staples. I'm impressed.

I've brought two of my babies here to get spayed. I know the staff will care for your pet. Yes you may have to get extras for additional fees but you can decline them too. Abby pet charged me 200 bucks just for shots which was crazy, so I say thank goodness for hope. I can get help to care for my dogs and can still afford to eat lol. Brody and Penny say wuff wuff

HOPE is awesome! I've taken two kittens in the past for spay and recently stray young dog that's was dumped on my property. I was worried about stray dog, due to not being socialized but HOPE staff members were great and asked questions about him, and took him to surgery with no issues. Staff explained everything to me there and in an email for pre and post care as well. Thank you everyone at HOPE, and the sponsors to assist in providing low cost much needed services.

Since the last time that I had to use their spay and neuter services a few years ago, they have improved their drop off and pick up procedures. The process was fairly quick and they've always taken excellent care of my pets. I am so thankful for them and the work they do to help the community with getting our pets spayed and neutered at a low cost as well as fixing the feral/community cats.

Update: Ion had help crossing the rainbow bridge and it could not have been a more easy decision with this clinic and Dr. Reyes. Knowing his quality of life as he declined would not be well. We were bought more time and we couldn’t appreciate it more. The tech that helped us through was genuine through out the whole experience. Thank you everyone. Without a place like this I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Dr Reyes at Wellness has been amazing with Ion for a whole year. It took awhile but we have found what works for my old boy. We are so happy. I wouldn’t have been able to do all this at a regular vet with inflated prices as I am on permanent disability but Ion has been with me through thick and thin. To have a caring vet means everything. Thank you!

Adopt don't shop! We adopted a kitten from HSSV. Fast forward 17 years and he is still going strong. If you need end of life services for your pet, HSSV has a serene environment to send them over the rainbow bridge and you can stay there. I got a tile of my dog's paw prints and I could've kept his ashes. I missed my dog so much that a month later I adopted a puppy from HSSV. The fees are extremely reasonable compared to buying an animal and paying a veterinarian's fees for spaying / neutering and vaccinations. It was well worth it.

When my cat showed up last Saturday with a broken tail, the vet informed me that an amputation was the only option. Facing the high cost of the procedure while already in a difficult financial position, I felt completely overwhelmed and started desperately searching for any avenues or options that could help. After hitting dead ends elsewhere, I finally made contact with the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. Not only did they step in to help me out financially, but they also showed genuine compassion, love, and care that completely carried me through one of the hardest moments I've faced. There is simply no way I could have gotten through this without them. Their kindness has had a profound impact on me, and I can honestly say it's going to make me a better person moving forward. There are not enough kind words in the world to express my gratitude. I am forever indebted to this organization. Thank you for the financial help, and thank you for showing such deep compassion, love, and care when we needed it most.

tomorrow will be our one week anniversary of adopting out first kitten from the hssv (and our first kitten in general)! the adoption process was so seamless and a lot simpler than expected. Gretchen was super helpful and informative in letting us see all the kittens and had an amazing attitude that made it all the more enjoyable. And to Michelle who helped us with the paperwork process, thank you for making it and seamless and cracking jokes with us! she made the experience memorable and fun. our kitten came to us in good health and well taken care of. they gave me all of his medical records from foster care to the most updated and let us know what his next vaccines are. they also set us up with pet insurance which i am grateful for, it was such an easy process. i am happy to report that our kitty (previously named grady) has been adjusting very well and is so happy. he was definitely the best choice for us and i would definitely adopt through the hssv again!

I cannot say enough amazing things about this place! My cat had to be emergency boarded for a couple weeks with the Helping Paws program. As a vet technician I have not been away from my cat one night in the past 10 years so my nerves were a wreck. Miguel, Marci and the humane society staff not only gave me updates, answered all my questions but when found the food that's healthy for my cats system. This facility is one of a kind! They literally saved my Saint Bernard dog Sally's life. If it wasn't for them she would have died they gave her back to me and she's been healthy ever since. When the local neighborhoods need them they step up to the plat they assess the situation find a solution and do it immediately .. look at what they did for the victims of the Eaton fire. They single-handedly were the solution for all of those families that had pets not turning away anybody not one single soul. Giving out free food for the pets free housing for the pets whatever the people needed for as long as they needed it. The employees are very compassionate again they're one of a kind!

People were really nice and understanding. I got lost twice, and each time, a volunteer was more than happy to walk me to where I needed to go. Both all the animals were having a good time at the shelter. Everything was clean and there wasn't overcrowding at all. Parking is underground, and a few spots are open right at the foster office. I've never been to an animal shelter before, but it looked like this one was very loved by people. One note though: their floors are uneven, so it might be hard for wheelchair users or people with balance issues to get around certain parts of the shelter.

We can't say enough about Pasadena Humane. Our vet wanted over $1400 to have our dog spayed, PH offered the same service for $400. Our vet wanted over $1000 for full vaccination panel of our two pups, PH did it for $200. We went to the vaccination clinic and were amazed at how efficient and organized it was. The volunteers were kind, the clinic was clean, we were in and out in a matter of minutes. In a time when capital investors are buying up vet clinics and robbing pet owners, Pasadena Humane is living up to their name. We'll be donating to this organization in the future! Keep up the great work!

We had such a great experience at Cat Haven! It's about a 45-minute drive from Fresno and was absolutely worth the trip. The guided tour is about a ¼-mile trail where you'll see around 15 different species of wild cats. The guides are very knowledgeable and share interesting facts about each animal while explaining the important conservation work Cat Haven supports. The tour lasts about an hour, with tours running throughout the day (just note there are no tours between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.). Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and dress for the weather. If you visit during the summer, be prepared—it gets very hot! If you love animals and want to learn more about wild cat conservation, I highly recommend visiting Cat Haven. It's a fun, educational experience for both kids and adults.

Our guide was pretty knowledgable and nice and informative, but there was just something off about this place. They claimed to not be involved in any shady business to get the big cats, but when asked about where certain ones came from, they definitely avoided the question. They did explain how the founder would go around to different countries to get the cats. Then inside the museum there are plenty of photos of people doing just that… hunting and trapping the animals in other countries. So… not sure how they can claim that they are just "rescuing" the animals when it seems like a number of them were hunted and removed from their habitats. Maybe I'm wrong, but they avoided answering the questions and the information given seemed to point in the opposite direction of what they claimed. TL;DR: Animals were nice, not sure how good I feel morally after visiting.

They are overpriced and they dont know what they are selling you. Just go to Whiteys pet shop on blackstone for cheaper and knowledgeable service !

I was very impressed with the selection on dog food from this location. The prices were extremely reasonable. Having drive up service is an added bonus. I was traveling with a rescue dog that was anxious around people. Not having to worry about taking the dog in and out of the car not to mention around people was very important. Therefore, service to the car was extremely helpful for me.

I remember going to Kelley's in the 80's!!! I moved to the area in 2018 and most places I go need to be walking distance, so Kelley's it is. I really thought they would have trouble keeping up with all the big specialty stores and online competition… but I was wrong. I visit Kelley's an average of 4 times a week. I buy the bulk dry cat food for the 20 (or so) strays I feed. I think it's a good deal. I also buy fish for my aquariums. They get new fish every Thursday. The one thing I think they should change is the return policy for the live fish. Other stores are from 14 to 30 days, Kelley's is only 48 hours.

I have nothing but praise and admiration for all your wonderful staff and Vets. Work up this morning with my precious angel Ally’s butt in my face and I immediately felt joy and happiness. If you know you know. Love her to death. She came with the name Ally but I improved it by giving her a formal name I could use to scold her…3 months and I’m still waiting to use it. Allison Isabella Fears. Just rolls off the tongue. Guess I’ll never use it because my girl is practically perfect.

They don't deserve a one-star rating. Worst service! I called to complain about too many cats on my property destroying my belongings that I work hard for, and they didn't even care. This neighbor is collecting so many cats, and I've been complaining, but nothing is being done. They offered to do a catch-and-release program for $70. Why would I do that? That's not my job. If I wanted to work at the humane society, I would. It's their job to catch all these cats, not mine. But if it were their house, they would work quickly to fix the problem. I haven't seen them fix any problems. These cats defecate on my property, on my driveway, my brand new roof, and my new cars.

Adopted this sweet boy in December and the adoption process was so smooth! The workers were really helpful and were excited for our boy to be with his forever home. Will always appreciate this adoption center since it’s the place where I adopted my pups – everyone met Pickle!

First, I cannot speak on the shelter nor animal control aspect of this facility, only the vet clinic. The reviews for those services horrify me. I hope they have made improvements. With that said, I can only speak on their vet and customer services in the clinic itself. I was impressed with the facility in so many ways. From their response to my online request for appt. to booking and paperwork, to the actual neutering service and wrap up. The front and back offices ran like a well oiled machine. Very efficient, courteous, and professional. Their prices are reasonable and they don't gouge like other veterinary offices or clinics. I would not hesitate to use their veterinary services again. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, you are awesome!

I want to start by saying that I understand Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. provides valuable services to the community. However, my experience today was very disappointing due to the lack of awareness and consideration from one of their employees. While traveling down the street in my wheelchair, I encountered one of their vehicles parked directly blocking a curb ramp—the only accessible way for me to safely get down the sidewalk. This forced me to go out of my way and navigate through a much more dangerous area without proper access, putting me at risk of falling or getting injured. What made the situation even more frustrating is that the driver was outside the vehicle, standing and talking to another person while the vehicle was still running. They clearly saw me and chose not to move the vehicle or make any effort to clear the ramp. This shows a serious lack of awareness and respect for people with disabilities. I am sharing this not to criticize the organization as a whole, but to highlight the need for better training and accountability when it comes to accessibility and basic human consideration. Situations like this should not happen.

I’ve had all my cats and one dog spayed and neutered. They have the best prices and seem to treat pets well. I always refer to them. So far 6 pets 🫣 staff is nice and facilities are clean. As for the adoption part it’s so sad to hear all the dogs. People go get a pet, adopt don't shop. So many great pets are available.

Our family is hoping this reaches the kind people who recently adopted a small black Yorkie mix named Shadow from Inland Valley Humane Society. Shadow is about 11 years old (my kids forget she's older), has only one eye, and is very easy to recognize. She isn't just a dog to us—she has been part of our family for years. We searched for her every day after she went missing, put up signs, knocked on doors, checked local shelters, and never gave up looking. When we finally found her listing, we learned she had already been adopted. We completely understand that the shelter cannot release the adopters' personal information, and this is not directed at the family who adopted her. If anything, we believe they likely opened their hearts believing they were giving a homeless dog a loving home. Our only hope is that this message somehow reaches them. If you recently adopted a one-eyed black Yorkie named Shadow from Inland Valley Humane Society, please know that she has a family who has loved her deeply for many years and has been desperately searching for her. She has a little Shih Tzu brother named Chewy who misses her, and our home has felt empty without her. Shadow has been with us through so many memories. We were there when she survived a terrible dog attack that cost her an eye. We cared for her, loved her, and watched her recover. She loves belly rubs, makes the sweetest little snorting noises, scratches at bedroom doors when she wants to cuddle, and has a personality that is impossible to forget. If you are the family who adopted Shadow, we would be incredibly grateful if you would consider contacting Inland Valley Humane Society and letting them know you are willing to speak with us. Even if the outcome isn't what we hope for, having the opportunity to talk would mean the world to our family. Shadow, if somehow love could find its way to you, know that we haven't stopped looking and we never stopped loving you. We love you, Shadow.

The Central California SPCA in Fresno offers essential veterinary services, including vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, and microchipping, at competitive prices. Their online appointment system simplifies scheduling, and staff demonstrate a commitment to animal care, particularly in high-need areas like community cat support.

While their high-volume clinic operations may occasionally lead to longer wait times, the organization’s focus on affordability and compassionate care stands out. However, clearer communication protocols for missed appointments and strays could further enhance their service for dedicated pet caretakers.

I am deeply disappointed by my experience here in regard to their surgery clinic. I booked an appointment to get a feral cat spayed, which is a stressful process. It was extremely difficult to place the feral cat in a cat trap, she unfortunately escaped in the process of moving her. I knew I was going to miss the appointment window but when I called, Cristina (front staff) showed zero empathy or understanding of community cat caretaking. Explaining the situation to her, she responded in an insensitive tone and a bit sarcastic when telling me nothing could be done. They were not able to refund or credit my deposit, despite the circumstances. SPCA is a high-volume clinic that should have better protocols and compassion for people actively trying to reduce the stray population. In regards to their vaccination clinic, the prices are affordable but they mix in appointments and walk-ins so they always seem to be "running behind schedule"…be prepared to wait an extremely long time. Client assumes all risk.

It was easy to make an appointment online from their website for vaccines for my fur baby. We were seen pretty quickly. Their combo specials are extremely reasonable, way, way cheaper than my vets office. I was also able to schedule her to get spayed in a couple of weeks. Will definitely be returning here for her regular vaccines. This place beats the HOPE Animal Foundation by a mile!

Just a little while ago I had to take my dog in to cross the rainbow bridge and the people. There are so kind and gentle with your animals. It's unbelievable and refreshing 😍 I'm taking my next service dog to be spayed and microchipped there because I trust these people. She's also going to get some vaccinations when it's time from the ASPCA! The little dog was my service dog that I put down and his name was Sam and he served me for a great 8 and 1/2 years. The big dog that you see with the German Shepherd colored face and the white body is Olive and I'm adopting her to be my next service dog ❤️

My dogs used to run out from our backyard frequently and roam around the neighborhood, mind you they were both chipped and friendly neither of them caused harm on anyone and on top of that when they’d leave to explore they always found their way home. Until they didn’t because the SPCA got to them first, had them for less than 24 hours and then euthanized one of them without discussing with us first or notifying us that our pets were being held at this shelter. Same thing happened a few months later with the second dog we had, horrible place I’ll never forget the pain they caused on me as a child and now for killing off both of my dogs. reception lady was super insensitive too hopefully she doesn’t work there anymore .

I hate this place I saved a kitten not that long ago. I told them I wanted to adopt him. They told me they had to take him in to see if he’s fine. Long story short I’ve been calling for his status so I can take him home and they gave him to someone else. I can’t believe these people. They never returned my calls. I had to see online that he was already adopted. He was stuck on some bushes and the place he was stuck on was really had to get to, it took an hour to find a way in. I can’t believe they did that, I Love Cats. i’m really hurt right now I feel like crying. I really wanted him. I’m glad he has a family.

Found a kitten in my engine compartment…no kidding…I have no idea how he survived the ordeal … anyway I conducted a rescue mission for the little guy and removed quite a bit of components in order to extract him and make sure the little guy was safe and sound…a salmon dinner and straight to Carson shelter…they took him in promptly and had the same compassion to help this little guy as I did… he's already on the shelter site the next day as a stray and within 4 or 5 days he is on the site listed as ready to go home meaning he was spayed and vaccinated….I'm so happy for him…I have 2 German shepherds so he couldn't stay or I would have kept him…if your looking to add a beautiful kitten to your family go adopt him!!!!! I'm posting pics as well….

Carson Animal Shelter is a truly amazing place. It was unbelievable to see so many people surrendering their dogs, each with a different story, it was just heartbreaking, I nearly broke out in tears. It was then that I realized what the staff members and volunteers go through every day. These heroes are on the front lines every day helping dogs get adopted. Housing them with dignity and car every day. The staff are all so kind and patient. There are amazing discounts available. I brought home our little Dusty and she’s adjusting to her new family just fine. Thank you Carson Animal Shelter you are doing a great service to our dogs and our community. GodBlessYou all.

Frequently asked questions about pet adoption centers in California

What is a pet adoption center?

Pet adoption centers, often referred to as animal shelters or rescue organizations, are non-profit facilities dedicated to the care and placement of homeless, abandoned, or surrendered animals. They provide temporary housing, medical attention, and behavioral assessments for animals awaiting permanent homes. These centers play a crucial role in reducing pet overpopulation and connecting animals with loving families. The process often involves a thorough screening of potential adopters to ensure a good match.

How do adoption centers differ from breeders?

A fundamental difference lies in the purpose of each operation. Breeders typically select and breed animals with specific traits, often for profit. Adoption centers, conversely, focus on providing homes for animals who might otherwise face neglect, euthanasia, or unsuitable living conditions. Adoption centers prioritize the animal’s welfare and well-being, whereas breeders primarily prioritize profit. The origin of the animal – whether it’s from a carefully managed breeding program or a situation of need – significantly impacts the animal's history and potential challenges.

What types of animals can I find at a California adoption center?

California adoption centers commonly house a diverse range of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals (such as rabbits and guinea pigs), and occasionally reptiles and fish. The specific animals available vary depending on the center’s focus and partnerships. Many centers specialize in particular breeds or age groups, like senior pets or puppies. It's essential to contact the center directly to inquire about their current animal inventory.

What is the adoption process like?

The adoption process typically involves several steps. First, you’ll complete an application, providing information about your lifestyle, experience with pets, and living situation. The center will then conduct a background check and may contact references. Next, you’ll likely participate in an interview to assess your suitability as a pet owner. Finally, you’ll meet the animal and, if there’s a good connection, finalize the adoption agreement, which usually includes adoption fees and a commitment to providing proper care.

What are adoption fees, and what do they cover?

Adoption fees are designed to cover the costs of caring for the animal while it’s in the center’s care. These fees typically include initial veterinary care, such as vaccinations, spaying or neutering, microchipping, and a basic health examination. They also contribute to the center’s ongoing expenses, including food, shelter, medical treatment, and staff salaries. The specific amount of the fee can vary depending on the center and the animal’s needs.

Do adoption centers provide ongoing support?

Many adoption centers offer ongoing support to adopters, particularly during the initial adjustment period. This support can include advice on training, nutrition, and behavioral issues. Some centers also provide access to veterinary resources or pet supply discounts. The level of support offered varies from center to center, so it’s important to inquire about the specific support services available.

What is a home visit, and why is it conducted?

A home visit is a process where a member of the adoption center staff visits your home to assess your living environment and ensure it’s suitable for a pet. This is a crucial step in the adoption process, as it helps the center determine if your home provides a safe and comfortable environment for the animal. The visit helps identify potential hazards or challenges and allows the center to provide tailored advice and support. It’s a standard practice to protect both the animal and the adopter.

What happens if I can’t adopt a pet from the center?

Even if you don’t adopt a pet immediately, there are still ways to help. You can volunteer your time at the center, donate financial resources, or contribute goods, such as food, bedding, or toys. You can also help spread the word about the center and its animals through social media or by referring friends or family. Every little bit helps support the center’s mission.

How do adoption centers find new homes for their animals?

Adoption centers utilize a variety of methods to find new homes for their animals. This includes online listings on websites like Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet, social media marketing, adoption events, and networking with local veterinarians, groomers, and pet stores. They also work with rescue organizations and animal advocacy groups to broaden their reach and connect animals with potential adopters across a wider geographic area. Foster programs are often key to this process.

What is the role of fostering in pet adoption?

Fostering plays a vital role in many adoption centers. Foster families provide temporary homes for animals, offering care, affection, and socialization. This allows the center to assess the animal’s personality and behavior in a home environment and helps prepare them for permanent adoption. Fostering also frees up space in the center, allowing them to take in more animals in need. Foster families are often crucial in making a successful match between an animal and its forever home.
